POEMS

"See! They come
Fear in their feet
Drumming the earth
Criss-crossing the street
Red rimmed death
Stalks round their eyes
Heaving a knife
Rubbing its sides.

Wild appetite
Carnivorous snare
Mingle and slaughter
The morning air
See! They come
Fear in their feet
Drumming the earth
Criss-crossing the street

Doomed nostrils stoop
Trembling on the blade
Eyes bleat
Mutely seek the glade
Meat grasps meat
In rattling abattoir
Cudgeling the bones
Cleaving the hair

See! They come
Fear in their feet
Drumming the earth
Criss-crossing the street.

In cradle quietness
Of darkness deep
Rock gentle dreams
On their anvils
Crickets forge my sleep

A branch leans over
Leaf upon leaf

The tree throws
Straight from the sky
A solemn challenge

The shriek of a train
Disbuds the stillness
Stars crash
On to my broken lap.

In so tiny pot
So much life
Foundation shadows
Fringe all round
Dead leaves twirl down
Spirits of defeated hope
Old age beseeches
With glued palms
The weary, sweet scent
Of school girls going home
Rise in the air

But tiger strong and striped
Forwards the roads wind
Sinewed by Carter's brawn
Thongs of iron
Circle barrels of hope
Though I ride close
On broken wheels
To goals dumb-driven
Spurs of child-like hopes
Goad me to skies in my heart
With cords of gold

Tho', unfulfilled, nubile sky
Ruddies with lunar desire
Tho', on tracks of hard
Paralleled roads of steel
Despair of empty carriages
Rolls by

In the evening before me
In the heart of dark
Hearth-like sea
A distant fishing boat
Like a burning cinder
Beckons to me
Bats mewing softly
Fly out to sea

Embracing pebble
And shell
Merry-making
On infinite sand
Frothing at the lips
With stony, affectionate lust
Buffeting man against man
Togetherness
Tumbling brawning spree
Growling, roaring
Shoring you and me

I hear alienation cries
In mansions, homes
In subterranean sun kept huts
Umbilical cords
Communicants of food
Blood and love
No longer pulsate
Hard townsmen
Horned in heart and head
Butt and gore each other

Whence - moved
By primordial rhythm
Dost thou span
The waning skies.
Bestirring with mystic flaps
My measured life
Giant wing on distant bone
Could I but fathom
The ancient beat of blood
That moulds thee
Half beast, half bird!

Madonna of the night skies!
In the temples of the trees, I spy
Red, weird and brindled with fruit
The shadows of thy brawny skirt
That dim grim-dark cloth
Squeaking child in me
Clings to with prehistoric clasp
Drawing in belly, fur, claws
And aught that chains me
Close and wrinkled to thee!

O, fey-formed youth!
Curls, twirling
Like wind-strewn flakes
On thy curd-white brow
Wilt thou linger with me
In sprite-embracing shades
Soft Fawn's lips couched on mine
Like twin closeness
Of candles
Lambent at a shrine
Thy lucid limbs will
Together nestle
A rapturous haven
For a storm tossed
Coracle of love!

On humped up shore
Silent in catcall darkness
Waves stomping like whores
Dread, sagging, dismal moon
Joyless glow in dying eye.
In boiled scrotum of time
Each howling, couching seed-child
Crouched, eyeless, unbegotten
Across bleating trumpet might
Sheepish groaning gulls
Winged their crucified flight
In each scarlet privy
Pubic dragons, goyles
Roared lewdly at the rising sun
Chagrinned, misspent, unkempt
Hopefully I walked into
Midst the sparkling corn.

O, infant life
Curl
Thy piteous back
Round
Landlord walls
Look up
At eager sun!
Limousine
carrying pallid quota
of urine flows past
diabetic drains

Furtive slips
Of pink brokerage
Pawns the gold
Of disillusionment
Usurious nicotine
Of rapacious cigar
Stains flanks of naked tenement
Skull of poverty
Taut with unpaid rents
Buries face in
Warrant of ejectment
Macadam on
Forhead of street
Wrinkles with shame

Tigrous T.B. germ
panting for flesh
springs on desire
for bodily
existence
Suspiring gas lamp
sheds mosaic of
green sadness
on stones
of decadence.
